Auto touring in the mountains is a popular activity. You’ll find there are a ton of roads you can drive on and see the beauty of the mountains. Cades Cove Loop is an 11-mile loop road motorists drive on throughout the year to see historic buildings, wildlife, and even get out and hike. The Foothills Parkway is another popular road people love to drive and take in the sights. Blue Ridge Parkway and Newfound Gap Road are other popular drives through the Smokies.
2. Horseback Riding
What better way to see the mountains than to ride a horse through the trails? You can go horseback riding in the mountains or in the surrounding cities. This is a great thing to do in the Smoky Mountains, especially for kids since they get to interact with horses and discover the mountains in a new way!
Want to do something relaxing in the mountains? Get a Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license and head to the mountains to fish! There are plenty of places without a ton of traffic you can fish. You are allowed to fish in any of the streams and creeks in the park. Throughout the creeks and streams, you can find trout and bass.
A great way to explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is to bike on roads and trails. Bikers are allowed on the Cades Cove Loop, along with cars. If you want to be able to bike on the Loop without cars, get there before 10 a.m. in May through September. The other trails that are bike friendly include the Gatlinburg Trail, the Oconaluftee River Trail, and lower Deep Creek Trail.
